CHARACTER DETAILS

Name: Link
Canon: Breath of the Wild
Canon Point: Just post-game - so not long after he's defeated the Calamity.
Age: Technically, around 117-118. But 100 of those years were spent being in stasis in the Shrine of Ressurection, so physical and mental age is just 17-18.

Heba or Tian? Heba. Link is very much a person of action. Zelda's the one who likes to study and analyse - Link's the one who swings the sword and hits things. He's also no stranger to thrill-seeking, considering that he spends his time jumping off cliffs or shield surfing or generally launching himself into danger. He's not really someone with an inward focus, being more concerned with exploring with world around him and fulfilling tasks for others.

Acquired Ability: Memory Projection. Link can choose to project a memory, either his own or someone else's, to anyone in his immediate vicinity. To those who can see the memory it would be as if they are within the memory as spectators. (Memories may potentially begin by people hearing a little piano tune...)

Personality Traits:
POSITIVE
  • Link's perhaps single most defining trait is that he's courageous. It's in the whole job description of being the 'Hero of Hyrule', after all. But it's one that Link embodies, even when he doesn't even have any memories to drive that courage. He wakes up, not even knowing who he is or why the fate of Hyrule should be important to him, but he still agrees to fight and work towards stopping Ganon without any hesitation. He knows it's dangerous, and he eventually learns that it's a task that's also already killed him once before. But because he knows it's important, and he's the only one who can help, there's no question for him as to whether he should be involved.
  • He's also very much someone who likes to be useful and to help people. If someone says they need something - whether that be ingredients for a meal, a camp of enemies that need to be cleared out, or building an entirely new town, Link will want to help. Sometimes this is because he's been promised something in return, but in most cases Link just wants to have a task to complete and a way to help someone else out. This even includes people he doesn't like all that much - although nothing says he has to be polite while helping someone out.
  • And something that comes in handy when he's undertaking his various quests is the fact that Link is highly pragmatic, and a problem solver. If he's outclassed by an enemy, he'll sneak around or use underhanded tactics to whittle them down from a distance before engaging. He'll use his puzzle-solving skills to make his way through the various shrines and challenges scattered across Hyrule, sometimes using quite unorthodox approaches to do so. He's still very good at the general hack-and-slash approach, and it's one he employs frequently - but he's not one to approach all of his problems with brute force.

NEGATIVE
  • The dark flip-size of Link's courage is that he's reckless, and self-sacrificing. Both Mipha and Zelda have described him as such, and the fact is that his explorations of Hyrule involve a generally inadvisable amount of leaping off of cliffs, bombs, and setting things on fire. Personal safety is not always a consideration that factors heavily into Link's decision making. It's a bit different when other people are involved, though - it's himself that he will casually put at risk, not others.
  • He also happens to be woefully lacking in social skills. Before losing all of his memories, Link tended to rarely speak - the result of him feeling like he had bottle up and hide any concerns or worries he might have, due to his role as the Hero of Hyrule and the near to 'appear strong'. After losing his memories, Link has basically been spending all of his time alone in the wilderness. He doesn't even remember what the normal rules of society, and as a result he's rather naive and tackless and abrupt in his responses to people. He's woefully unprepared to deal with living in any kind of community.
  • And lastly, he's also a bit of a hoarder. Link collects stuff, wherever he goes. Mushrooms, bugs, gemstones, various slain monster parts. He will get sidetracked from whatever he's doing by the need to go and pick up a bunch of flowers. For the most part the fact that he can store all of this in the Slate makes this fairly benign, but if there's an object someone else has that he wants - or worse, that someone has promised him - Link will get very insistent about getting that object. (See: the paraglider, the snow and sand boots, the Thunder Helm...)

Suitability: I really enjoy plot-heavy games - I'm always much more invested when there's some sort of overarching plotline that characters need to respond to. So I'm particularly interested in getting Link involved in the rebellion plotlines, and having him go on missions. Link is also a character who's going to be particularly interested in anything exploration related - he's all but guaranteed to go wondering off into the jungles around Witches Camp to see what he can find. And yes, he will also want to go exploring the Troop (he can get a mask, it's cool).

CHARACTER QUESTIONNAIRE

What are your character's feelings on freedom? How would they define freedom? How important is it to them? Would they fight for it, or have they fought for it in the past? If they have, how did they go about it?
For the comparatively short time of Link's life that he can actually remember, he's personally had a lot of freedom - he can go wherever he likes, when he likes. He's pretty much only been limited by whether or not he's strong enough to fight whatever monsters might be in his way. Lack of freedom isn't something he's known or experienced. At the same time however, he's also been very aware of Zelda's lack of freedom, and freeing her from the castle has been his main motivation. 'Freedom' as such has been a very individualised concept for link, rather than something he understands as on a group or institutional level.

Describe a formative moment in your character's life, something that changed them and defined who they are as a person.
The most obvious would waking up from the Shrine of Resurrection - but since that's already been covered quite a lot elsewhere, another major moment would be picking up the Master Sword. Even if Link doesn't remember it, it's absolutely an event that shaped his life - it's what designated him as 'the Hero', with all of responsibilities and stresses that implies. It's also an event that was essentially inevitable, but the consequences of taking up the sword are also ones that Link never shies or runs away from, both with and without his memories.

Does your character have a favorite person? If so, how would they describe that person? What do they like about that person? What do they dislike? If they don't have a favorite person, what would they look for in a favorite person? What traits would draw them to another person? What traits could they tolerate that others might not be able to?
Even though he still only has a handful of memories of her, Zelda. She's his strongest tie to his own past, and their shared destiny probably also makes her the only person he could really relate to in many ways. She knows what it's like to be put into the role of a figure of legend, and tasked with dealing with a powerful, legendary enemy. She's also curious and inquisitive, just like Link, and cares about other people and her kingdom. And he admired the way she kept going and trying to move forward, even after having to deal with constant failure and setbacks.

What has your character's arc been like so far? How have they developed from their first appearance to their canon point?
Link's biggest changes come right before the start of the game - really there's one big dividing line in his life, that splits everything into 'before the Shrine of Resurrection' and 'after the Shrine of Resurrection. Before, the pressures of his role and his destiny had made him quiet and stoic. He kept all his thoughts and feelings to himself, and had been quite repressed under the weight of all the expectations placed upon him. But losing his memories essentially freed him of those expectations. He's definitely not talkative by any means - but he's much freer with what he says and does. His journey across Hyrule was a lonely one, but that isolation and removal from his own life also allowed him the freedom to be himself, in a way he never could before.

How would you like to continue your character's arc in the game? How would you like them to develop? What would you like to have them accomplish?
What I'd like to develop with Link is how he actually interacts with people, and with a society. He's not used to having to work with others, or live in a society. He made a few connections with people while journeying around Hyrule, but they were largely surface-level and transactional in nature. I'd like to see Link learn how to actually be a part of a group again, and learn how to build new connections with other people and make new friends. I'm also interested in having him get pretty involved in the rebellion plotline - it'll be interesting to throw him into different types of missions from what he's used to, and Link will also be invested in the rebellion's goals, since he will want to get back home.
